Production Log

Having been fully focused so much on the analysis and deconstruction of my music video I felt I have fallen slightly behind on the research. This means that I have to allocate more time to complete this. I will give myself a maximum of a week and a half to complete it to make sure that I do not fall behind.

Production Log

I have been extremely busy filming my actual music video this week. I had to wake up very early and begin to plan everything for my artist. I looked at YouTube videos and researched into how to create a alternative rock music video. This was important as mise en-scene is essential in the creation of any product as it is what makes the actual product visually appealing.

I then went to the woods at Ruislip Lido and walked around until I found a number of places I felt was suitable to film in. This is where the actual production of the filming took place, sometimes taking varies takes in order to ensure each shot was useable. I tried to be adventurous with the shots I took. Taking some in the reflection of water, others through sunlight. All making my music video appear more professional.

I then traveled to my house in South Ruislip
in which I filmed the next sequence of my music video. Here we worked indoors ensuring we captured the emotion of the character getting ready. We tried to portray this from both viewpoints, therefore some shots are shown from the main characters POV.

As the light began to dim, we were unable to film outside this day.

Moodboard

This is a gathering of all my ideas for my video. It has helped me massively as I now know what conventions I want my own music video to have. Additionally this has improved my imagination of what I want to include and some of the colours I want to use even for my digipak.

Production Log

Today I have analysed the song lyrics of the song I am using for my music video. This was extremely helpful as it allowed me to acknowledge the kind of shots I might be able to incorporate into my music video. I found that the lyrics of my song actually fit perfectly with the story-line of my narrative. Phrases like "somebody like you" "to see you" and "one more time" will all allow me to emphasize the sympathy I wish the audience to feel for my character. It will also enable me to have interesting shots, such as extreme close ups of the girls eyes with dilated pupils etc...

Furthermore another thing I have completed today was write up a brief props list using Prezi. This allowed me to think outside the box about things I could use in my music video to make it more interesting. I came up with black clothing in order to fit in with the conventions of rock music. In contrast to the empty woods, to emphasize the girls loneliness after not seeing her partner for a long time, and the lyrics on the floor and trees will represent the fact that to her nothing is important anymore however the guy is still singing the lyrics out.

Production Log

During this week I have been looking into Digipaks. Before this project I was not even sure what a digipak was. This is because they are rare and are not seen as much as now people tend to buy music on iTunes and therefore do not purchase the albums in stores. They are more expensive to create and some people would just prefer a CD as they thing that it is what is on the CD that counts, not what the CD is actually in. However, by researching them I have discovered they are actually seen as very valuable. And are often considered as collectables for real fans. This made me feel as though it will be more valuable making a digipak than making a CD.
Another thing I have been doing this week is looking into how Music Channels come into being. By researching channels like MTV and Viva it made me realize what they look for, and what their audience look for to be entertained. It gave me a better feel for the actual music industry.

Photographs of potential locations

Having decided where I want to film my music video made me come to a conclusion that filming in the rain when there are sad lyrics may be a good idea. This is because it will add to the mood of the song and it will engage the audience more, so therefore doing this Prezi has massively helped me decided on where I want to film and what.

Artist Styling/Costume Planning

I have done a Prezi in order to portray the costumes my artist will wear for the music video I am creating. Even though I have decided for my artist to wear vintage clothing, in many areas she will also wear black as it is a convention of rock music videos. On the other hand I am trying to make this music video look as unique as possible so therefore vintage clothing will be a priority. Furthermore, doing this has helped me figure out very carefully what scenes I want my artist to wear what costume, for example if it is a sad scene she will not be wearing a vintage flowery dress, but instead she will have black boots and a black dress on to also portray to the audience the mood, in order for them to engage more with the music video.

Analysis of Kodaline "All I Want" Lyrics

I have done an analysis of the lyrics for the song I am using for my music video and this has helped me massively as now I have a better insight into what the lyrics really mean. This highlights that I am now able to make my music video closely relate to the lyrics as I have taken somet ime to analyse them thoroughly.

Analysis of Kodaline - All I want initial video

This music video is essentially a short story that fits around the message of the song. The video starts before the song starts to play which allows a short introduction to the story about to be told, it denotes a young woman photocopying, giving us the setting of the video. We then hear her scream and begin to laugh, something you would not normally associate together. The music begins as we see the cause of her scream, a work colleague ( we can see this from the costume, a suit) however he has some facial deformities. His expression as another colleague makes out he is some kind of monster shows he is upset and sets up the rest of the video.

As the music goes on the video cuts between shots of him merely working, however it focuses in and out of the foreground and background always revealing a person watching him in disgust.

The first time we see him smile is when he is watching the young woman from the beginning of the video, the video quick cuts between POV shots of her accompanying the lyrics "I lay in tears in bed all night, alone without you by my side" The song explains his feelings for the woman and this has an effect on the audience as we know she isn't interested.
When he goes home the mise en scene is dark, hiding his face, this makes him look like any other person and connotes that he is himself when he is alone. The video cuts between clips of him and his dog, showing him happy, then as he sits down we hear "You brought out the best in me" It suggests that he does have someone that loves him, however it saddens the audience as we realise it is in fact only his dog.
The lyrics "Our love was made for movie screens" is accompanied by the him holding a photograph of himself as a baby with what we can assume is his mother overlooking him with a large smile on her face. This is an over the shoulder shot so that even through the way he is sitting as he looks at the photograph we can see he is upset and longs for this love again.
The turning point of the video comes during the bridge of the song, the music builds up as the man builds up the courage to save the woman from some men harassing her. He begins to fight them as the music reaches it's loudest and most intense point. This emphasises how important this moment is and how much courage it took him to do it.
The very end of the video reveals a message, as the woman accepts him asking him to call her, it shows that the way people look isn't everything.

Permission to use song

In order to gain permission for me to use Kodaline's song ' All I Want ' I decided to email their record label. I wrote a polite message, telling them who I am and what school I attend followed by the reason why I wanted to use their song. I ended the email in a professional way, and it highlights that I have considered that permission needs to be taken and I am aware of copyright issues.

Production Log

During my last couple of lessons I have been concentrating on my story board. This is what i will use to guide me when doing my actual film shoot for my music video. I am very happy with the shots I have come up with, however I have no doubt that when actually filming my music video I will think of other creative shots and angles to experiment with. For example, I might see the sunlight beaming through the trees and decide to add that to my music video, however I can not put that on my story board yet as I do not know what the weather conditions will be like on the filming day.

To create my story board I printed 15 story board templates. Under each photo I have drawn I have written: the length of the shot (most ranging between 2-3 seconds), what is happening in the shot (so when it comes to filming i know how to direct my actor), the type of shot (for example, long shot), the angle of the shot (for example low angle) the type of movement in the shot (for example tracking, panning etc...) and also the sound (the song, sirens, breaks of the car).

To ensure the shots I drew fit into my alternative rock genre I watched the actual video of "Kodaline - all I want "(which is the song I'm using in my music video). When watching it I realized it is completely different to my idea, which I like a lot as it makes me feel as though my narrative is completely original.

Another thing I did when creating my story board was listen to the song over and over again. I would look at the length of the shots i had created and count as the song played. This allowed me to have a rough acknowledgment of how long each shot needs to be, and how far along in the song i was. This enabled me to create enough shots to fill the length of the song.

Digipack Draft

In today's lesson I have carried on with my digipack and decided to do a landscape version of the album poster as well as a portrait. Additionally I have also completed an Album cover which is very simple however attractive and looks very realistic.

This is the portrait album poster which I have been working on for the past few lessons and managed to finish the draft version today. I believe I have followed the typical conventions of an album poster, however there are still a few more things to be added in order for it to be completely finished and labeled as a final digipack product. Therefore in the next few lessons I will be carrying on with this and try to make it look as unique as possible.

Secondly, this is my draft version of the album cover, which looks very simple and I will probably be adding more to it and try to make it my own as much as possible in order to follow the soft rock theme. This is because I do not want to make it look exactly like Kodaline's actual album, I would like to put a twist to it so it looks more unique.
